"What you need to know " (excerpt), an audio-video installation, 2004

An exploration the meaning and power of written text: as symbols, graphics and a vehicle for both communication and miscommunication, able to inform yet also perplex. From 2002-4 I experimented with multimedia and the spoken word in a performance-based environment working in Hungary, the "cut-up" technique being a common visual thread to my work. This work meshes together sound bites from various government literature and film from events in Brighton. The viewer is hypnotised, disturbed, irritated, and unable to consciously absorb the information he is confronted with. The challenge is to make a choice: to extrapolate and understand meaning from the details, or to try and make sense of the work holistically.
